As a fan of Anthony Gormley, I was interested and excited to hear about the 'Living Monument installation on the Fourth Plinth' in Trafalgar Square which kicks off on Monday 6th July.

The empty plinth in Trafalgar Square

A place normally reserved for statues of kings and generals, Gormley's concept is that the plinth will exhibit individuals who have been chosen from thousands of entries representing the entire population of the UK. These individuals have one hour to express themselves in any way they choose, as long as it's legal.
This will go on every hour, twenty four hours a day, for one hundred days.
I am most fortunate in that my local train station, just a two minute walk from my flat, takes me directly to Waterloo, and from there it is an easy and lovely walk to Trafalgar Square, and so I plan to take a look at what's going on as much as possible.
Probaby most noted for his Angel of the North sculpture and other huge projects, I was delighted to come across his evocative statue 'Sound II' in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral. I highly recommend taking the time to visit the Cathedral and to view this wonderful piece.
Here we see Gormley at his best. The statue is totally integrated into its surrounding...so much so, that there is almost no separation, and for me it expressed a sense of great serenity, peace, and harmony.

Summers in London are always fun, but this year it seems to me that it is really jumping.
Yet another public display of creativity has been launched. Musicians have been invited to perform at train stations and other public venues around the city. There are of course many fantastic buskers, but in this new project, these are professionals who we would normally have to pay to see.
For those of us fortunate enough to have a 'freedom pass' (the only catch is that you do have to be over 60!) a day in London can be Free. I take some water and food, and a great array of events are just there for the taking.
Next week I am giving a workshop based on the importance of carrying a sketch book, and so for the next few days I will show images from some of my own 5" x 7" sketch book which I carry with me everywhere I go.

I want to thank my friend Tony who I visted in Putney yeterday, for passing onto me tubes of oils and water colours, that he no longer uses. A great gift, and one that is much appreciated.
Another amazing tennis day coming up.
