The white area you see is white paper. If I was working on a canvas in oil paint then I would have to paint the white....but with water colour it's always the paper.
My Grandfather served in WW1 and WW2 he was a medic. He would tell me stories very fondly of France and the French peoples. On a cold winter night after only having frozen turnips to eat, he sat on a door step out of the snow and through a small crack in the door a frail hand reached out to hand him a cup of hot chickory. I don't know about Quaker schools in the UK. The Quakers were persecuted here in the UK a long time ago, which is why so many of them went to America. In the state of Pennsylvania where I lived, there are many Quaker meeting houses and schools.
